| Term | Meaning | How it appears on the pack |
|---|---|---|
| Shelf life (date of minimum durability) | How long the unopened product, stored properly, keeps its function and stays safe | A date, often after an hourglass symbol or “best before end of” |
| Period after opening (PAO) | How long the product can be used safely once opened | An open-jar symbol with a number of months, e.g. “6M” |
| Expiration date (drugs) | The date until which a drug is shown to be stable, safe and effective | “EXP” date, required for drugs such as antiseptic wipes in the US |
For wipes, both matter. A sealed pack can last years; an opened soft pack with a weak reseal can dry out within weeks of heavy use. That is why the closure and seal integrity are part of the shelf-life story (see the packaging guide).
