Custom Wet Wipes Packaging: Artwork, Printing and Label Checklist

By LX Wipe Sourcing Team · Published · 8 min read

Short answer

Custom wet wipes packaging is usually printed by rotogravure on flexible film, sometimes by flexo or digital printing for shorter runs, or decorated with printed labels on stock packs. To get it right: start from the supplier’s dieline, design in vector files with bleed and the right colour references, include every mandatory label element for your market, and approve a digital proof and a printed or pre-production sample before the run. Each new design or colour set adds set-up cost, which is a main reason printed packs have MOQs.

Which printing methods are used for wet wipes packaging?

MethodHow it worksBest forMOQ impact
RotogravureEngraved cylinders, one per colour, print on film that is then laminatedLong runs, high-quality photographic imagesCylinder cost per colour; efficient only at volume
FlexographicFlexible printing platesMedium runs, simpler graphicsLower set-up than gravure
Digital printingNo cylinders or platesShort runs, tests, many variantsLowest set-up; higher cost per pack
Printed label on stock packPlain or stock-printed film plus your labelPilot orders, white labelLowest MOQ; less premium look

Which method is available depends on the partner factory and its film printer. The MOQ effect is explained in the MOQ and cost guide.

How should you prepare artwork files?

  • Use the supplier’s dieline. It shows the pack dimensions, seal areas, the lid or sticker window, and the safe zone. Do not resize one from another product.
  • Vector artwork (AI, PDF or EPS) with fonts outlined; images at print resolution.
  • Bleed and safe margins as marked on the dieline; keep text away from seals and folds.
  • Colour references. Give Pantone (spot) references for brand colours; gravure often prints spot colours plus white. Ask how many colours the job allows.
  • White ink and transparency. On clear or metallised film, specify where white underprint goes.
  • Barcodes at the size and contrast your retailers accept. In the US, GS1 US explains how to obtain the GTIN behind a UPC barcode (GS1 US). Each variant needs its own number.
  • Space for codes. Leave a clear area for the batch and date code printed on the line.

What must appear on the pack in each market?

MarketKey mandatory items for cosmetic wipes
United StatesIdentity, net quantity on the principal display panel (for wipes, count; FDA rules allow numerical count where it accurately conveys the quantity), ingredients, name and place of business, warnings where needed (21 CFR 701.13); “Do Not Flush” symbol in states with wipes labelling laws
EUResponsible person name and address, country of origin for imports, nominal content, durability date or PAO, precautions, batch number, function, ingredients (Article 19 of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009); “PLASTIC IN PRODUCT” marking for plastic-containing wipes
Great BritainEquivalent cosmetic labelling with a UK Responsible Person address
Gulf (GSO 1943)Arabic and English labelling, expiry date or PAO, country of origin (see Middle East guide)

The placement rules for the “Do Not Flush” symbol are in Do Not Flush labeling laws by state, and the EU plastic marking is set by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2151 (EUR-Lex).

How does the proofing and approval process work?

  1. Dieline from the supplier for your exact format and count.
  2. Artwork from you or your designer on the dieline.
  3. Pre-press check by the printer: colours, trapping, barcode, text size.
  4. Digital proof for sign-off of every word and symbol. This is your last cheap chance to fix errors.
  5. Colour proof or press sample for brand colours, if needed.
  6. Pre-production sample of the filled pack for final approval.

Keep one person responsible for checking regulatory text. Once cylinders are engraved and film is printed, corrections cost time and money.

What artwork mistakes cause reprints?

  • Text or barcodes placed over seals, folds or the lid area.
  • Wrong count or sheet size after the specification changed.
  • Claims on the pack that the product cannot support (see environmental claims).
  • Missing languages, or an address that is not the responsible person’s.
  • One artwork used for markets with different rules, such as “flushable” imagery on wipes sold in states that require “Do Not Flush”.
  • No space left for the batch and date code.

The broader packaging decisions (format, film, lids, export cartons) are in the packaging guide.

Frequently asked questions

How is wet wipes packaging printed?

Usually by rotogravure on flexible film that is laminated into the pack material. Flexo and digital printing are used for medium and short runs, and printed labels on stock packs for pilot orders.

What file format do I need for wet wipes artwork?

Vector files such as AI, PDF or EPS, built on the supplier’s dieline, with outlined fonts, bleed, Pantone references for brand colours and print-resolution images.

Why does custom printing increase the MOQ?

Each design and colour needs cylinders or plates and a set-up run, and film is printed in rolls. Spreading that set-up over enough packs keeps the unit cost reasonable.

How should net quantity be shown on wet wipes in the US?

On the principal display panel. FDA cosmetic rules allow numerical count where it accurately conveys the quantity, so wipes typically state the count; add size information if count alone could mislead.

Does LX Wipe provide dielines?

Yes. LX Wipe provides the dieline for your chosen format and count, checks the artwork against it, and arranges proofs and pre-production samples before printing.
