How Many Wet Wipes Fit in a Container? Loading and Shipping Guide

By LX Wipe Sourcing Team · Published · 7 min read

Short answer

How many wet wipes fit in a container depends on the carton size, not the nominal container volume. Divide each internal container dimension by the matching carton dimension, round down, and multiply; try the other carton orientations and keep the best result. Then check weight: wipes are mostly liquid, so heavy cartons can hit the payload limit before the space is full. For reference, a 40-foot high cube has roughly 76 m³ of nominal internal volume, but geometry and loading practice mean you will use less than that.

What are the internal sizes of shipping containers?

Dimensions vary slightly by carrier and unit. Kuehne+Nagel publishes typical dry container specifications (Kuehne+Nagel):

ContainerInside length × width × heightNominal capacityMax cargo (typical)
20' standard5.900 × 2.350 × 2.393 m33.2 m³21,770 kg
40' standard12.036 × 2.350 × 2.392 m67.7 m³26,780 kg
40' high cube12.010 × 2.330 × 2.690 m76.28 m³26,512 kg

Always confirm the allocated container and any road weight limits at destination with your forwarder.

How do you calculate how many cartons fit?

  1. Get the export carton’s outside dimensions and gross weight from the supplier.
  2. For one orientation, divide the container’s inside length by the carton length, width by width and height by height. Round each result down.
  3. Multiply the three whole numbers to get cartons per container.
  4. Repeat with the carton turned (swap length and width; check whether cartons may be laid on their side).
  5. Multiply cartons by gross weight and compare with the maximum payload.
  6. Multiply cartons by packs per carton to get packs per container.

Leave allowance for door clearance, bulges and loading practice. Your forwarder or the factory’s loading team may get a few more or fewer cartons in by mixing orientations.

Worked example: an illustrative carton

Illustrative numbers only, not a quote or a standard carton. Assume an export carton of 50 × 35 × 30 cm (0.0525 m³) weighing 10 kg.

ContainerFit (L × W × H)CartonsVolume usedGross weight
20' standard11 × 6 × 746224.3 m³4,620 kg
40' standard24 × 6 × 71,00852.9 m³10,080 kg
40' high cube24 × 6 × 81,15260.5 m³11,520 kg

Two lessons: geometry, not nominal volume, limits the count (the 40' high cube example uses about 60 of its 76 m³); and changing carton height by a few centimetres can add or lose a whole layer. That is why it pays to agree carton dimensions with the container in mind before production. In this example weight is not the limit, but heavier cartons or canisters can reach payload first.

LCL or FCL: which should you book?

LCL (less than container load)FCL (full container load)
Best forFirst orders and small volumesRegular orders that fill most of a container
Pricing basisPer cubic metre or weight, plus consolidation feesPer container
HandlingCargo is consolidated and deconsolidated with othersSealed at the factory, opened at destination
TransitUsually longer due to consolidationUsually more direct

For wet wipes, extra handling in LCL means more risk of crushed cartons and lids, so strong cartons and pallet wrap matter. Order size and MOQ trade-offs are in the MOQ and cost guide.

Which Incoterm should you use when shipping from China?

Incoterms rules, published by the International Chamber of Commerce, define who arranges and pays for each part of the journey and where risk passes (ICC). FOB and CIF are used for sea freight: under FOB, risk passes when the goods are on board at the port of loading; CIF adds the seller paying freight and minimum insurance to the destination port, though risk still passes at loading. DDP makes the seller responsible for delivery, import clearance and duties at destination. The choice for wipes buyers is compared in sourcing wet wipes from China.

What should you check at container loading?

  • Cartons match the approved shipping marks, counts and batch codes.
  • Container is clean, dry and odour-free before loading; damaged floors or holes are rejected.
  • Heavy cartons at the bottom, no crushing of lids or canisters.
  • Photos of loading, the seal number and the closed doors.
  • Paperwork (invoice, packing list) matches what was loaded.

A pre-shipment inspection with loading supervision can cover these. LX Wipe coordinates inspection and export with partner factories and agrees the carton specification with you before production.

Frequently asked questions

How many cartons of wet wipes fit in a 40ft container?

It depends on carton size. In our illustrative example with 50 × 35 × 30 cm cartons, a 40-foot standard container fits 1,008 cartons and a 40-foot high cube 1,152. Calculate with your own carton dimensions.

What is the internal volume of a 40ft high cube container?

About 76 m³ nominal, according to typical published specifications, with an internal height of about 2.69 m. Usable volume is lower because cartons rarely fill every gap.

Do wet wipes containers hit weight limits?

They can. Wipes are mostly liquid, so heavy cartons or canisters may reach the payload limit before the space is full. Always check cartons × gross weight against the payload.

Should I ship my first wet wipes order LCL or FCL?

Small first orders often go LCL. Once orders fill most of a container, FCL is usually simpler and involves less handling.

Can LX Wipe plan cartons to fit a container?

Yes. LX Wipe agrees carton dimensions and packs per carton with the partner factory to suit your container and destination before production.
